Sedentary Helpers - Production Workers

Of the 137 sedentary, unskilled DOT codes, 12 of them occur insides of Helpers – Production Workers (Helpers).  Helpers represents the third largest accumulation of sedentary, unskilled DOT codes.  Production Workers, All Other (SOC 51-9199) has 52 of the relevant codes; Inspectors, Testers, Sorters, samplers, and Weighers (SOC 51-9061) lists 14.

Labor places 553 DOT codes within Helpers.  We now turn to the number of jobs in the group now that we have a sense of the DOT listings.

The number of part-time jobs erodes the total number of jobs slightly.  In pursuit of the numbers game, erosion counts.  We now turn to the Occupational Requirements Survey to assess the presence of work that continues to exist that requires no skills and not more than sedentary exertion.

The ORS does not list “short demonstration” as the specific vocational preparation code.   Per the ORS, there are no SVP 1 jobs left in Helpers.  The number of jobs that get classified as SVP 2 is the overwhelming majority, 65.3%.  We now turn from skill level to exertion:

Over a third of the Helper jobs fall within the occasional lifting/carrying required of the definition of sedentary work.  Under the 1991 edition of the DOT, the definition of exertion for lifting/carrying purposes collapses the seldom and occasional lifting/carrying into one category.  The maximum lift is still important — required lifting/carrying over 10 pounds in a workday makes the occupation not sedentary.

The seldom lifting/carrying requirements leaves 12.6% of Helpers as eligible for classification as sedentary.  Constant and frequent lifting/carrying as well as pushing/pulling matter:

These data do not offend the interim conclusion that 12.6% of jobs fall within the definition of sedentary exertion.  The primary difference between sedentary and light exertion is not the amount lifted/carried/pushed/pulled; the primary difference between sedentary and light exertion is the amount of standing/walking required in a workday.  Social Security Ruling 83-10.  We examine that requirement:

These data exclude the existence of measured sedentary work.  The amount of standing/walking required at the 10th percentile does not permit the inference of sitting most of the day with no more than occasional standing/walking.  The ORS does not have data for “sitting vs. standing/walking at will,” which leads to the conclusion that the option does not exist.  The ORS does list strength:

Jobs that do not require heavy or medium exertion represent 10.2% of Helpers.  That represents the maximum number of light jobs that occur in Helpers.  We summarize our conclusions with the serendipitous finding concerning the number of light, unskilled helper jobs along with the absence of ascertainable sedentary, unskilled jobs:
